Description

Lorain County JVS is a Career and Technical Education Training Center.  It consists of a public high school for students in grades 9-12 and the Adult Career Center which offers training and educational opportunities for adults.

 

Position: High School Teacher/Intervention Specialist
Salary Rate: Per Negotiated Contract Reports to: High School Principal Employment:

INTERVENTION SPECIALIST INSTRUCTOR
(High School)


Overview: Teach the appropriate course of study for each subject area including employability skills by using a variety of instructional techniques that meet individual learning styles.

SALARY:
Appropriate step on Teacher’s Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education

REPORTS TO:                                     
Assigned Supervisor/Principal

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education
  • Appropriate State of Ohio certification/licensure as required for this position
  • Experience in developing, implementing and evaluating IEP’s
  • Flexibility to work with various schedules in multiple settings
  • Optimal technology-related skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • Engaging instructional techniques
  • Utilizes multiple strategies for student assessment
  • Desire to work with high school age students

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Transition To Work (TTW) Endorsement
  • Prior teaching experience in a special education environment
  • Extensive experience in the IAT process
  • Knowledge of career and technical program offerings
  • First Aide/ CPR training
  • Experience in a career technical environment
  • Extensive knowledge of current law as it relates to providing special education services in the State of Ohio

 

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

Essential Functions:

  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the student
  • Ensure safety of students
  • Effectively manage the classroom and individual student behavior to maintain a good learning environment
  • Judiciously discipline students when necessary
  • Prepare clear and timely lesson plans
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as as required
  • Membership and participation in the appropriate Advisory Committee
  • Instruct appropriate employability skills
  • Provide guidance to students which will promote their welfare and their proper educational development
  • Attend teacher/parent conferences
  • Maintain appropriate parental contact
  • Provide complete lesson plans for a substitute
  • Refer students suspected of learning difficulties to the intervention assistance team
  • Collaborate with colleagues
  • Teach and evaluate the students using sound instructional practices
  • Participate in mentoring as an entry year teacher
  • Attend meetings and in-services as requested
  • Interact in a positive manner with parents, students, and staff
  • Teach new concepts and facilitate different activities enabling students to learn in different ways
  • Make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy
  • Act as teacher, facilitator and information source in subject area specialty
  • Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter and present clear, complete and accurate explanation utilizing a variety of instructional techniques and media suitable to the level learners
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, and facilities
  • Assist the administration in implementing all procedures and rules governing student life and conduct
  • Instruct the assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
  • Practice ethics of the teaching profession
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with parents through effective use of interim reports, report cards and conferences
  • Maintain and improve professional competence by attending professional growth, seminars, workshops, etc.
  • Refer student attendance, health and psychological/emotional problems to principal and/or guidance counselor
  • Maintain respect at all times for confidential information
  • Follow scope and sequence of the instructional program as defined in the courses of study which have been approved by the Board of Education 
  • Interact professionally with JVS staff and academies
  • Accommodate students with behavior disorders
  • Develop, implement and evaluate Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
  • Maintain basic knowledge of Model Ohio Policies and Procedures for Students with Disabilities and applicable special education laws 
  • Modify and tutor students in Regular Education curriculum
  • Communicate regularly with parents of students
  • Design and implement lesson plans to meet individual student needs
  • Provide independent courses for students who need credits for graduation
  • Assist students in preparation for proficiency tests
  • Work with various student youth groups (e.g., VICA, FCCLA, Interact, )
  • Maintain applicable licenses, certificates, etc.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain cooperative professional relationships
  • Promote good public relations
  • Work closely with administrators as part of development teams to discuss and implement new practices such as "team" teaching, semester projects, etc.
  • Serve as a role model for students 
  • Supervise student teachers
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or designee
  • Assist in the selection of textbooks, equipment, and other educational materials
  • Participate in committees, study teams, and co-curricular activities as agreed upon
  • Participate in intervention assistance team meetings
  • Maintain and improve professional competence by attending professional seminars, workshops, etc. to keep current of relevant issues
  • Counsel, advise, encourage, and motivate students
  • Respond to routine questions and requests in a timely, appropriate manner

 Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from a four-year college or university
  • Prior teaching experience is preferable
  • Appropriate State of Ohio certifications/license
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
  • Effective, active listening skills
  • Record keeping skills
  • Training in varied instructional design
  • Organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of academic area and teaching methodology

  • Occasional interaction with unruly students
